Milwaukee Irish Fest 2015

Once again, the 6.5 hour ride each way was well worth the trip, considering the talent that the LARGEST Irish Festival has gracing it’s stages. Bands like Brigid’s Cross, , John Whelan and his collection of amazing talent, The High Kings, Lunasa, Full Set, The Sreaming Orphans, The Red Hot Chili Pipers and the Elders ALWAYS are great to see!
But the highlights of the weekend (for me at least), and judging by the crowd reaction they were in agreement with me, were TWO things: 1) A tribute to American music by an AMAZING lineup consisting of all of the members of Eileen Ivers and Immigrant Soul, Scythian, and We Banjo 3! In all my years doing this, it is RARE when i see a set that is SO good, I felt chills going down my spine!
The other highlight came about due to a very lowlight of the weekend. EVERYBODY’S favorite BOH (beer on head) poser, the one and only Marty Cahill (Director of the Syracuse, NY Irish fest) received the news that his brother had passed away suddenly on Thursday just as he was at the airport about to make the trip to Milwaukee to join in the festivities. What happened over the weekend was such an outpouring of love for Marty was an amazing thing to see. Many people posted pics on FB with beers on their heads as a tribute. The crowning acheivement came from an idea Pat Murphy and I came up with in the bar the night before. We got the WHOLE crowd (many thousands) to all put beers on their head in the background while the band Gaelic Storm rested beers on their heads from the stage. It was a night I’ll NEVER forget!

dublin irish fest 2012

you KNOW the weekend is going to be good when the first person you see at the hotel is eileen ivers, along with her husband brian and son adrian! once settled in, it was time to head over to the fest to catch a set by the prodigals. next up, the young dubliners rocked the main stage, which on most nights would have left the crowd happy and well entertained, as they are THAT good! but this crowd grew larger and larger as the time for gaelic storm was near. after swapping humerous stories with patrick and steve, they, along with ryan, peter, and the always lovely jessie headed out to blow the crowd away.  friday’s photos are HERE

saturday brought be to see slide and the always amazing daire bracken (along with the rest of the great band), and his whirling dervish performance. following that were the always fantastic elders (from kc), and moya brennan with her band, t with the maggies. i finished the day with a cool band called SHOOGLENIFTY, a band was somewhat hard to classify, but VERY easy to listen to. we also managed to get TWO group photos of the CELTBORG SOCIETY. by the time the day had morphed into night, the bar hotel filled with a lot of the musicians, and then 4 different seisuns formed in different parts of the hotel.  saturday’s photos are HERE

sunday found me at john whelan’s set. not only is this guy a fantastic musician and performer, he has an AMAZING talent for finding young musicians to play along with him. next up, the band two2many, fronted by the lovely and talented keri mcbride. after that, it was time for the scattering, where most of the bands mix and match for a couple of songs before all coming together for one BIG group song.  sunday’s photos are HERE

once again, the dublin irish fest does NOT disappoint!

WOW (wade oval wednesday) w/ carlos jones & the P.L.U.S. band

now i know that carlos jones is popular in cleveland, and that wade oval wednesday has gotten more popular over the years, but THIS one was HUGE!

i have been going to wade oval wednesdays for a number of years, as it is a GREAT little thing that happens in cleveland over the summer. for 10 straight weeks, they have a different style of band play from 6 – 9p.m. in the grass are that sits in between the art museum, history museum, botanical gardens, cleveland cinematheque, and historical society. they have bands that play vlues, reggae, jazz, salsa, motown, 80’s, you name it. it is a different one each week.

all i can say is that carlos & band had that place grooving at an AMAZING level…

for more pitures, HERE you go…

dayton celtic fest 2012

you wouldn’t expect it, but the city of dayton, ohio has a really nice irish fest held right downtown alongside the river. and the AMAZING thing is that with all of the great talent they have at this festival, you would think it would cost to attend, but no, it’s free.

as a late decision to go, mindy, sally and i decided to check out the festival, held between the weeks of irish fests in cleveland and dublin, ohio. with an amazing number of vendors, too, the lineup of talent included gaelic storm (who just released a new cd, chicken boxer), enter the haggis, scythian, homeland, slide, and Máirtín de Cógáin.

what a good choice we made, as this was a really nice festival we will probably return to in the future.

carlos jones @ shooter’s

once again, carlos jones & the P.L.U.S. band rocked the house at shooter’s. towards the end, there were more kids on stage playing instruments than actual band members… :)

annapolis irish fest 2012

in only it’s second year, the annapolis irish fest has grown from 5,000 in attendance to 20,000! and with the beginnings that they have, i can see this growing into a festival that will be one many of the bands will want to stop at.

held at the anne arundel fairgrounds, the lineup included icewagon flu, barleyjuice, scythian, the screaming orphans, the rovers, albannach, and the rouges that entertained everybody all day on the 2 stages.

unfortunately, due to scheduling (and the girls having to head north), the screaming orphans set was cut way short. that was the only bummer for the day.
